What was Jesus trying to teach the disciples? Note: Jesus left twelve baskets full when he fed the 5000 people on the Israel side (Israel had 12 main regions or tribes).
Prefiguring the establishment of the Church with all its subdivisons in the sense of Archidioceses and parishes. The flock is large and is everywhere in the world and it needs a good organisation. The baskets, they also make me think of the numberless vessels from which his Precious Body is offered to the worldwide flock. The yeast is the symbol of evil corruption. The mentaphor includes the idea of a tiny amount of yeast able to ferment a large amount of dough. this context refers to the evil disposition of both the Pharisees and Herod Antipas called for Jesus to produce a sign i.e. to proof of his divine authority . Jesus teaching His disciples
Jesus reminded His disciples that Jesus is the provider and He is sufficient for all their needs. Bible says that Isreal had 12 main regions and 12 tribes. Here, Jesus left twelve baskets full when He fed the 5000 people on the Isreal side. Isreal is considered as the Children of God. It is definite that, Jesus is sufficient for all the needs of Children of God. Jesus teaches His disciples that He is more than enough for all their needs. 12 and 12? that all are inheritors of God`s kingdom? that he came to share the Bread the Word amongst everyone and that all will be united through him. Also 12 makes me think of the number of disciples - like when at Mass you have more than one priest or deacon and the congrgation forms lines. It`s like the craetion of the kingdom and the entrusting of different subdivisions flocks to their different ministers. They forgot to take bread; and they didn't have more than one loaf in the boat with them. He charged them, saying, "Take heed: beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod." They reasoned with one another, saying, "It's because we have no bread."
Jesus, perceiving it, said to them, "Why do you reason that it's because you have no bread? Don't you perceive yet, neither understand? Is your heart still hardened? Having eyes, don't you see? Having ears, don't you hear? Don't you remember? When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?" They told him, "Twelve."
"When the seven loaves fed the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?" They told him, "Seven."
He asked them, "Don't you understand, yet?"
